He created & implemented Research International’s first-ever worldwide learning & development (L&D) strategy and launched a truly blended learning programme. Whilst at RI, Daniel also created a portfolio of programmes aimed at developing client relationship and business development skills (from account planning to presentation delivery, via cold calling, pitching, consultative selling, negotiating and ongoing client relationship management). He personally trained (link to training delivery page) close to 1000 RI employees, from trainee to Board Director, across the RI world, including the US, the UK, Continental Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia-Pacific (from China and Korea via Singapore and Hong Kong to Indonesia and Australia). In addition, he acted as a specialist L&D consultant to many RI clients (link to L&D consultancy page), developing & facilitating programmes on subjects such as Market Intelligence Leadership and Effective Communication Skills for clients’ internal marketing, research and senior leadership teams. More widely, Daniel trained frequently for the British Market Research Association (BMRA) & chaired the association’s Education Committee from 2003 to 2006, quadrupling the number of BMRA courses and increasing revenue by 600% within 3 years. Moreover, he designed and then delivered over 30 of the twin presentation skills courses ‘Delivering the Sizzle, not the Sausage’ and ‘Hook, Line & Thinker’ for the BMRA, achieving the association’s highest mean score for quality of trainer (9.47 out of 10). During the BMRA’s merger with the Market Research Society (MRS) in 2006, Daniel played a key role in the blending of the two organisation’s L&D offers, resulting in a much enlarged MRS programme which develops business, people & client skills as well as technical & research capability. Upon the completion of the BMRA / MRS merger, Daniel accepted an invitation to join both the MRS Professional Development Advisory Board & its Training Advisory Group. He also now delivers a range of MRS courses (link to training delivery page) in leadership, performance management, client relationship and business development, delivering insight and presentation skills, as well as appearing as guest speaker on a number of other programmes including the MRS Summer School. Daniel was awarded an MA with Distinction in Human Resource Development (HRD) by Middlesex University Business School in 2006, and has returned frequently as a guest lecturer on the subject of ‘The Innovative L&D Practitioner’. A Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD), he was recently commissioned to write a ‘Reflection’ on the CIPD’s 2007 Learning & Development Survey’, which was published in 2007. This was then reproduced as a lead article in ‘People Magazine’ to coincide with the April 2007 CIPD HRD Conference. (Click here for the original ‘Reflection’. Daniel Wain also chaired a keynote session at the 2007 HRD Conference on ‘The Role of the Line Manager in Learning and Development’, with fellow speakers Professor John Purcell (of Warwick Business School) and Geraldine Grainger (Head of L&D at John Lewis). Having spoken at many industry conferences over the years, Daniel won the award for Best Presented Paper at the 2006 Market Research Society (MRS) Conference and spoke again at the 2007 MRS Golden Jubilee Conference. Both papers can be viewed here. Most recently he wrote the cover story to the September 2007 edition of ‘Research’ and a main article in the Summer 2007 issue of ‘The HR Director’. As of October 2007, Daniel will be contributing a regular monthly column to ‘Research’, on people management and development issues. A selection of his articles is available here. Life Before Learning & Development For several years, he led the New Business Development & Marketing team for RI Service Measurement (the largest and most profitable division of RI’s flagship UK company). As head of the company’s Mystery Customer Research team, he succeeded in growing the business by over 450% in 3 years, before moving into his learning & development role. Life Beyond Learning & Development As well as founding Strut & Fret and producing & marketing all of its output, Daniel acted in many of its productions, playing such diverse roles as Lloyd Dallas in the company’s first 5-star Edinburgh hit ‘Noises Off’, Archer in ‘The Beaux Stratagem’, Moon in ‘The Real Inspector Hound’, the title roles of ‘Tartuffe’, ‘The Libertine’ and ‘The Suicide’ and one of the ugly sisters in ‘Cinderella’. This last show was also the first of several that Daniel Wain wrote for Strut & Fret. The others included an adaptation of Beaumarchais’s ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ (with Marc Brenner) and the original works ‘Burying Caesar’ and ‘Look Behind You’. After Strut & Fret, Daniel continued to act, predominately for Hamish Gray at London’s Tabard Theatre in such roles as Mr Morland in ‘Mary Rose’ by J M Barrie and the title role of ‘The Master Forger’ by David Weiner. After several years dedicated to the development of Research International’s learning & development strategy, Daniel Wain is now returning to the theatre as actor, writer and producer. He has recently co-founded Rattling Tongue Theatre Company, which aims to debut in spring 2008. In addition, he is currently writing a new play.
